Inner Child Work

in Client-Centred Psychotherapy

CE053

Prerequisites: None

Overview

Over the past years, the understanding of the impact of developmental trauma and neglect has increased. Yet, most professional responses are geared towards symptom reduction only. Inner Child work offers another approach, one that allows us to shift from the experience of the hurt and scared Child into that of the secure and capable Adult.

This course reviews the basics of Inner Child work: trust building, cultivating the skill of observation, and introducing the idea of the Inner Adult – while exploring all concepts of Inner Child work as an approach for getting in touch and healing the vulnerable part in our clients.

As an approach to psychotherapy, Inner Child work becomes a safe way to explore past experiences that shaped our client’s current day responses and behaviours. From that exploration we can then use the client’s strengths and their Adult self to heal and integrate past traumas and to gain a new perspective of their biography, thus allowing them to create new experiences in their current day lives.

Participants will learn:

  • How to apply their Observer Self to keep clients safe during their explorations
  • How to help clients find and build their own Adult Self
  • Safety measures and cautions in Inner Child work
  • Which tools work well with Inner Child work as an approach
  • How to apply the Inner Child approach with clients of different backgrounds and approaches to life
  • How to use their own understanding of Self safely when working with vulnerable clients in Inner Child work sessions
  • How to work with experiences from different phases of life
I enrolled in this course to enhance my knowledge of Inner Child theory.  I was attracted to the program because of Sabine’s reputable and extensive psychotherapy expertise as well as her speciality in this field.  The weekend more than met my expectations. I not only learned the steps from which to guide a client safely through this modality, but I acquired new and important knowledge of the foundational piece and bedrock of this work.
Sabine shared her Inner Child Work expertise as well as her anecdotes from her professional experiences. This supported our learning in a way that was easy to understand and relatable.  The handouts were clear, concise and easy to follow and I still refer to them today when needing additional information.
I feel empowered and confident after this workshop, knowing that I will be able to apply what I learned to the benefit my clients.  Over the last year I have used this knowledge and modality within my practice with much success and I will always be appreciative of the skills Sabine has shared with us.

I found this workshop to be really informative and educational. I took a lot of my own notes during the workshop and really enjoyed learning about the Inner Child and how you can use this approach in a therapeutic setting. I left this course feeling like I had tons of tips and tools in my back pocket to use in session with clients and feeling more confident in my ability as a practitioner in facilitating Inner Child work.

Rachel Day, RPC-C

I found this course very comprehensive and full of rich detail. It was taught and delivered in a way that made the more challenging concepts accessible, and the material easily transferable into my practice. I have referred to my course notes numerous times as issues arise with clients that this therapeutic technique is suitable for, and am always rewarded with a new entry point or a deeper understanding of working with the Inner Child.
I highly recommend this course to any practitoner who is passionate about supporting clients through deep healing with practical tools, careful approaches and well informed content.

I participated in the Inner Child Workshop in October 2019.  My goal was to deepen my understanding of how to work with clients in a concrete way.  I found the 3 days to be highly informative.  Sabine presented an altogether new way of thinking about Inner Child work and how to approach it.  I came away with some valuable tools to integrate into my practice.
